About Topica:

First, I should describe Topica a bit. Topica.com is an email newsletter management site that offers publishers free email list services. Ezine publishers get a simple and free interface for managing their list and delivering their newsletter. In exchange for offering their services for free, Topica gets to place top sponsorship ads in the email newsletters. Topica handles thousands of lists, giving them the ability to target ads to many different niches. I chose small business and home business lists.

The cost:

Depending on who you talk to at Topica there are minimum purchases for advertisers. I was told that minimum was $4500. However as a first time advertiser I asked for a trial run for half that price and got it. So I made my biggest advertising investment ever for $2250.00...

In return I would receive 500,000 unique addresses at a 3X delivery. That means my ad would be seen by 500,000 different subscribers across their network of business related email newsletters, three times each. This would yield 1.5 million impressions. They also offered to "value ad" (ad broker talk for a bonus) 1 million impressions bringing my total to 2.5 million impressions. At a typical .5% click rate, they estimated I would get approximately 12,500 targeted visits.

The results:

Exactly as they promised. It took about six weeks for all the impressions to come in. But in the end I had received 12,512 targeted visitors. My cost per visitor was approximately 18 cents.

And this was real traffic that resulted in sales. While the campaign yielded a slightly lower than average visitor to sales ratio, about one sale in every 200 visitors, this still resulted in 57 sales.

Let's see... 57 x $149 = $8493. That's almost four times what I paid for the campaign. Even after factoring in product costs, shipping, etc. the Topica campaign was very profitable. So profitable in fact that I reinvested the profits in a second Topica.com campaign. And the second campaign is already yielding better results than the first!

Remember, Topica has quite a vast newsletter network. No matter what you are promoting they should be able to reach your target audience. If you can stretch your ad budget, or do like I did and apply a few months budget, they are well worth the price!
